Colonial Williamsburg presents a slice of history at about the time of the beginning of the American Revolution. The press of the time was the Common press, and this
press, with minor modifications, had been essentially unchanged since the time of Gutenberg. The print shop at Williamsburg is a working shop, and printers are at work, inking and printing a local "newes" paper. Across the alley is another small shop, the book bindery. While I was at Williamsburg two years ago, they were building a "new" common press, and I took a number of photos. I'm planning to write a short story about the building of the press, with illustrations. They actually made two--one for themselves, and one for the Newseum in Arlington, VA.
