SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTE

The Smithsonian Institute sign outside one of their displays,
which has a print shop, complete with two common presses.

The Smithsonian has quite an extensive collection of presses. I'm going to feature photos of some of the most important presses, in terms of the development of the press, from the wooden Common Press of colonial times, up to the invention of the iron clamshell type of press, which is the invention of the late 1800's--Gordon's press, the Golding Pearl presses, and a little later, the C&P presses are all examples of the "clamshell press."
