AUGUSTA HERITAGE CENTER

2001, A Dulcimer Odyssey

We started lessons Monday morning, and had ten students in our class, an even mix of men and women, most of us complete beginners. Right away, (well, after tuning our dulcimers for the first hour or so) we learned to play “Frere Jacques”, “Bile Them Cabbage Down”, and more complex tunes followed, in addition to learning chords and scales.

Every afternoon we met in the chapel for more music, usually performed by our instructors.  I was unprepared for this experience. It was just simply not believable that we had such depth of talent all gathered together and performing and teaching us.

I don't doubt that if I'd had this experience at a formative age, I should have decided on a different career path.
